7 Fun Sex Facts From Around the World

We’ve put together a list of the most interesting and fun sex facts from around the globe.

Have you ever wondered where the first dildo came from? What do you know about ancient intercourse? Are you curious about sexual customs from other countries?

If so, keep reading to dazzle and delight your friends with these titillating tidbits!

1. The oldest dildo was found in a German cave.

One of the oldest depictions of a phallus was found in the Hohle Fels cave in Germany. Made from fine siltstone, this ice age dildo dates back around 27,000 to 30,000 years ago and was carved into this shape deliberately. The Museum of Prehistory Blaubeuren has indicated there could have been several different uses for this tool. While it represents a dick, it could have been a decorative symbol, similar to depictions of Venus from the same time.

Given its smooth, polished surface and carved notch, it’s not hard to believe that this could have been used for sexual stimulation. Our own modern-day dildos have a lot more bells and whistles to them, but ultimately the tools we use for pleasure haven’t massively changed.

2. You can legally own more guns in Texas than vibrators.

Yes, you read that right! Many laws put a dampener on a good time in Texas. Under indecency rules, openly displayed sex toys are illegal, with the law labelling them as “obscene devices”. So, possessing six or more “obscene devices or similar obscene articles” is considered a crime in the Lone Star State. Approved in the 70s, not only is it a crime to own six or more adult toys, but it’s presumed to be promoting sex toy usage through sale, lending and other means. If caught, you can face a $4,000 fine or up to a year in prison.

You might be wondering, how would they ever police this?! Well, in 2003, former school teacher Joanne Web was arrested in a high-profile sting operation when she was selling sex toys to a couple at a Passion Party (think Virgin Vie or a Tupperware party). In 2008, the federal appeals court ruled that it was a violation of the right to privacy, yet it is still placed as a Texas law today.

3. In rural Austria, women gave apples to their lovers… after storing them in their armpits!

Originating in the 19th century, it was traditional for Austrian women in rural villages to pop a few apple slices in their armpits before attending a dance because the fruit would capture their “sexual scent”. Once they’d danced a merry jig, the women would offer their apple slices to any potential suitors they had their eye on. Interested men would then take a bite out of the potent fruit! Talk about one of your five-a-day…

4. Russia had a national day of conception.

Specific to the eastern region of Ulyanovsk, the 12th of September is the National Day of Conception in Russia. Introduced due to the declining birth rate in the massive country, couples are encouraged to take the day off work and stay home to get down and dirty! Successful couples with babies nine months later receive prizes from the government. Previous gifts have included cars, washing machines and even apartments!

It does seem to have worked because Russia’s population steadily increased from 2006 to 2012. If only this was a national holiday everywhere…

5. Ancient Roman women used a rather unusual aphrodisiac…

We’ve all got our go-to sexy daydream, and, unsurprisingly, so did the women (and men) of Ancient Rome. Gladiators were often seen almost like rock stars or athletes of their time and similarly became the object of fantasy because of their victories and showstopping, muscle-bound physiques.

Once they were done fighting, gladiators would clean themselves with a tool called a strigil by scrapping the sweat, dirt and oil from their bodies before bathing. This would then be bottled and sold to their adoring fans outside the arenas. Naturally, the thinking was the more successful the fighter, the more virile they were, and so roman women would add this sweaty mixture to their cosmetics to use as an aphrodisiac. That adds a whole new meaning to a natural musk… How’s that for some stinking fun sex facts?

6. Sex poems were incredibly popular in medieval France

Dirty talk isn’t a new thing! In fact, the people of medieval France loved listening to erotic tales and poems called Fabiau. With names like “Berangier of the Long Arse”, it’s unsurprising that these tales were full of filthy comedy. Performed by bands of travelling entertainers, the subject of these naughty bedtime stories was, more often than not, sex.

Now, that’s what we call a literary classic! 😉

7. Fluffy handcuffs are one of the top confiscated items at airport security!

According to London City Airport, one of the items they have to take off travellers most regularly is fluffy handcuffs. That’s some wild long weekend! So, we suggest you pack your kinky accessories in a bag destined for the hold rather than your hand luggage to avoid embarrassment.

While sex toy ownership might be limited in areas like Texas, it’s always a good idea to double-check which countries outright ban sex toys when you’re off on your jollies. Places like Thailand, The Maldives and the United Arab Emirates all consider adult toys as obscene goods and not only will they confiscate them, but you could face jail time in extreme circumstances.

The missus who was always losing her car keys was given a large Marge Simpson soft toy. We didn’t think anything of it but passing through security in Egypt the knobbly shape clearly looked like something else. We were taken aside and quizzed by armed security guards ‘no, no, no these are not allowed in here’ eeek
