Ben Wa Balls and Toxic Shock Syndrome

Concerns are arising surrounding a potential link between the use of Ben Wa Balls and Toxic Shock Syndrome.

We love Ben Wa Balls (Kegel Balls, Love Balls – whatever you want to call them!). So, we’ve done our research to help put any fears to rest.

What is Toxic Shock Syndrome?

Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) is a rare but serious bacterial infection that can be fatal if untreated. It occurs when:

“the bacteria responsible – Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, which normally live harmlessly on the skin – invade the body’s bloodstream and release poisonous toxins.” (NHS Online)

Men, women and children can get TSS but there does seem to be a link between the use of tampons and cases of TSS. However, by changing your tampon regularly (every 6-8 hours at least) and using the lowest absorbency for your flow, the risk is reduced.

So, what about Ben Wa Balls or Love Balls?

We had a quick chat with one of our local Nurse Practitioners and he assured us there is virtually no risk of TSS as long as the balls are not worn for too long (6 hours is usually recommended as the maximum). Risk can also be reduced by cleaning thoroughly before and after each use.

TSS is associated with tampons because of their porous nature, which holds bacteria inside your body. Using an antibacterial sex toy cleaner and making sure ALL areas (including retrieval cords) are washed is key. Some Ben Wa Balls are even suitable to clean in the dishwasher (but check first)!

Remember to remove the balls when you go to the toilet. It’s unlikely your pelvic floor muscles are strong enough to hold them AND empty your bladder, but just in case!

Ben Wa Balls and love eggs are completely safe to use and the chances of any infection, TSS or otherwise, is barely there* when used properly and safely. As with any sex toy, you should never share Ben Wa Balls with anyone else.
